The RKTs Progress satellite, located in the Russian city of Samara, oversaw the development of a number of experimental spacecraft, including the Aist-2D satellite. In many ways, nevertheless, it represents a new phase in the evolution of Russian remote-sensing satellite systems, as its size, complexity, and technical significance greatly exceed those of its two predecessors.
