INSAT-1B was the second satellite in the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) series that was launched on 30 August 1983 but its full operational capability was achieved in October 1983. It continued to operate into 1990 with all its 4375 two-way voice or equivalent circuits in use. This mission was carried out in Shuttle [PAM-D] launch vehicle and has a mass of 1152 Kg. This satellite was used for communication and meteorology services. INSAT-1B was a multipurpose communication and meteorology satellite, serving similar functions as its predecessor INSAT-1A. Its primary objectives included providing telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorological, and search and rescue services to India and neighboring regions.
