The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission, and a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2. Chandrayaan-3 was launched onboard a Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (LVM-3) rocket, ISRO's heavy-lift launch vehicle from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on July 14.
Chandrayaan-3, which was placed in an Elliptic Parking Orbit (EPO) by LVM-3, has begun its journey to the Moon with the health of the spacecraft reported to be normal. The mission will demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface.
"Chandrayaan 3 is a very important step. Landing this time is very important. Unless you land, you cannot take samples, you cannot land human beings, you cannot create moon bases. So, landing is one important step for further exploration", said ISRO chief S Somanath.

The first orbit-raising maneuver (Earthbound firing-1) was successfully performed at ISTRAC/ISRO in Bengaluru and the spacecraft is now in 41762 km x 173 km orbit. The lander and rover are expected to land near the lunar south pole region on 23 August 2023.
"Chandrayaan-3 scripts a new chapter in India's space odyssey. It soars high, elevating the dreams and ambitions of every Indian. This momentous achievement is a testament to our scientists' relentless dedication. I salute their spirit and ingenuity!", said Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
