SkyFox Labs s.r.o., a new Space company and manufacturer of the world's first space-friendly components for CubeSats and Small Satellites has introduced a new GPS patch antenna module for satellite development
The nanoPATCH-L1 is a subminiature version of the Space-Friendly GPS-L1 CubeSat Active Antenna module specially designed to provide a strong signal for GPS satellites reception in space. It features an integrated Low Noise Amplifier as well as a SAW filter that is matched together with a 35×35 mm Patch antenna and minimized ground plane.
The antenna has an SNR of up to 50 dBc-Hz on the ground for close-to-zenith satellites (mounted on chassis). It has a typical power consumption of 20 mA, 3.3 V (at 25°C), and requires a supply voltage of 2.7 to 5.5V. Outer dimensions of 50×50 mm represent a great compromise of the size and minimum viable ground plane area. The module shall be embedded into the satellite body close to conductive parts such as metallic sidewalls or PCB ground planes, to extend the existing antenna ground plane.
The nanoPATCH-L1 comes with an easy-to-use MCX signal and power interface which provides a compact solution for all kinds of projects where strong GPS signal reception with enough margins is required. It also uses an FR-4 space-grade 4-layer PCB.
The product is manufactured in two grades to satisfy both Engineering and Flight requirements. Modules (/EM, /FM) are electrically identical, however, their chemical and mechanical properties allow them to be used in a laboratory or space, respectively. The fully functional Engineering Model is finished by red coating with Remove Before Flight labeling.
