IAI a company whose technology expertise features systems and solutions from reconnaissance satellites and radars to all aspects of command, control, and communications, computing and cyber, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems has introduced a new magnetometer for satellite applications.
The Tamam Magnetometer (P/N 2425) from IAI is a unit used in LEO satellites to provide coarse azimuth direction, by data processing of the three measured orthogonal components of the earth's magnetic field.
The Magnetometer has a dynamic range of +/-0.6 gauss and a nominal scale factor of 8 to 10 V/gauss. It has a bandwidth of less than 100 Hz (-3dB) and a linearity of less than 0.5 %. This magnetometer requires an input voltage of 15 V and has a maximum power consumption of less than 0.5 W. The Magnetometer has a mass of 180 grams and measures 90 x 53 x 27 mm.
The Magnetometer is a self-contained unit with integrated electronics and reduced volume, mass, and power consumption. It operates according to the flux-gate principle and includes a Built-In-Test function which allows for fast verification of the serviceability condition.
The Magnetometer consists of the following sub-assemblies:
- A sensor unit that consists of coils wound on high permeability ferromagnetic cores.
- An electronic unit, which consists of an oscillator that excites the sensors and three control-capture-loops that process the sensor signals and provide three output analog signals.
- The functional module is mounted in an aluminum case.
The magnetometer has been developed and produced as part of a family of products dedicated to the Attitude Control System of satellites, in the framework of TAMAM's Division's long-term activities as part of the inertial navigation domain. The product is based on technological assets of magnetic design and material engineering developed for gyros, accelerometers, synchros and resolvers, electrical motors, and magnetotorquers.
