This marked the second launch in the Beidou-3 program, the third phase of the countrys Navigation Satellite Program that started in 2000 with regional coverage over China and was expanded in 2009 to deliver services in the broader Asia-Pacific Region before the inauguration of the Global Navigation Satellite System which is expected to be fully operational by 2020 consisting of 35 satellites in Medium Earth Orbit, Geostationary Orbit and inclined Geosynchronous Orbits. The Beidou-3 program saw its first launch in June when the first IGSO satellite was launched, also marking the first flight of the YZ-1 stage.
